“A moment of radical acceptance is a moment of genuine freedom”. -Tara Brach.

Last night I dreamed that outside my back door was a field of pedicularis. It was a species I’d never seen before (like a cross between p. Semibarbata and p. Densiflora if you must know) but entirely its own. And yet I knew it both from the way it looked and the way it felt. Because pedicularis is like that— they all look different and yet at their core they are so similar. In my dream, I lay down in this field of flowers and cried with gratitude, and felt surrounded by their soft strength, their deep connection to the flow of what is.

All the different species of Pedicularis have a similar relaxation effect, though some affect the skeletal muscles more, and some the mind. But overall, the effect is the same: Pedicularis teaches us to offer our tension up to the greater flow of life. It teaches us that strength can come not from resistance but from surrender.

We usually tense out of resistance, or out of fear. We tense to avoid pain, both physically and mentally. To brace against the onslaught of uncertainty, and what it may bring. But, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, you can be as vigilant as you want, and life always brings the unexpected anyway. Resistance keeps us in a holding pattern, where we continuously experience what we are resisting. Without resistance we actually have more energy, more attention, and more capability to deal with the unknown when it comes.

Over the years of working with pedicularis, I’ve come to think of it more as a herb for surrender and acceptance. With musculoskeletal tension, is it unparalleled in its ability to unwind knots, relax the areas where we are holding— shoulders, neck, jaws, go from being locked up to allowing some blood flow. Diaphragms relax, more air comes in. Pelvic floors relax. Blood moves more freely. And because our minds and bodies are not separate, when we start surrendering our body parts to flow, our minds surrender too. We can take in more.

This surprise box is an ode to the magic of pedicularis: a plant so special that it often brings me to grateful tears. It is a stepping into the flow of life, and a relaxation of the resistance to what is. A box of surrender and radical acceptance. A beautiful full-bodied embracing of the ebb, and the flow.

I’ll be using 3 different species of pedicularis— p. densiflora, p. groenlandica, and p. racemosa. There will be cameos by rose, skullcap, and hawthorn. In this box, you’ll receive four products. There will be a tincture or elixir; a tea, a drinkable thing (tea or such); an external use product, be it a bath (or foot bath), body oil or possibly an incense or atmosphere mist; and a culinary item.
